Part II Looking back at the patient in case 1, it is important to look at other ways to treat the patient s depression. The patient’s depression lead to other things, like her hopelessness and anxiety, as addressed in my nursing diagnoses. It is often helpful to look outside of medicinal practices to find ways to help our patients. I was able to find literature addressing interventions that discussed relaxation techniques to help patients with depression, more specifically music therapy. I wanted to answer the clinical question: does music therapy improve depression among older adults? I wanted to look at a population of older adults, since my patient was 87, and the intervention of music therapy as opposed to no intervention, and the outcome of improved depression. I found two articles on this topic: Effect of music on depression levels and physiological responses in community-based older adults (Moon Fai Chan, Engle Angela Chan, Esther Mok, and Fionca Yuk Kwan Tse, 2009) (Ar ticle 1) and Effects of music on depression in older people: a randomised controlled trial (Moon Fai Chan, Zi Yang Wong, Hideaki Onishi, and Naidu Vellasamy Thayala, 2011) (Article 2), which both looked at music as an intervention for older adults with depression. There are schools attempting to eliminate teaching musical arts to our children. The English language, as we know it, carries a very strong parallel to these same interpretable words. Dialect and slang are just two of the many connotative forms to speak different languages. All languages contain these variations and reinforce the need for striving toward understanding a basically generic language. It would be very difficult to speak to a non-English speaking person and clearly convey a message unless both persons were familiar with basic terminology. It would be just as unlikely to communicate a musical message to someone not educated or interested in musical interpretation. The term music in itself has many different connotations. One in the United States may not have the same perceptions as one whose origin is France or Australia, or elsewhere in the world. In my travels through Europe and South America I had a hard time finding any truly original, locally produced music. The majority of the music I searched through were also popular in the United States. It was very easy to find foreigners singing an American song using their interpretation of our language. The entire world seems to be able to communicate with music and seems to understand it enough to share their own musical interpretation. Music is a language of it’s own and depending on how we speak it, it too can accomplish a multitude of results. People are no more able to understand a foreign language without education than they are to understand the unspoken language of music without proper musical education. A single score of music interpreted with a few of many available musical directions can tell as many stories as there are variations. For example, playing Cristofori’s Dream by David Lanz entirely lento-pianisimo (slow and very soft), creates a very peaceful and tranquil mood. Played again allegro-forte (lively, brisk, and loud), emits an uplifting feeling. Yet, by using both interpretations progressively and regressively within this identical musical score, one could feel depleted and elated in the same timeframe. This is perhaps the most ascribable reason to pursue aknowledge of musical semantics. Within music one expresses many emotions, speaks many languages, conveys complex messages, and tells many stories. Music can be a selfish form of conversation and it is not always necessary to have a recipient to onvey a message. One has only to listen while playing music to communicate with themselves, yet most would suspect the stability of a person who attempted this scenario by simply talking and responding while alone. Music merges the physical aspects of harmony with a sublime and metaphysical effect creating an inner peace. Seldom will words alone be capable of accomplishing what just one musical composition can communicate when we teach our children to appreciate music. With all available forms of communication, one should never forget that listening carefully to music–as we should listen to others speak–can clarify the true meanings of all languages. We should all strive to include intuition and intellect into language of any form. A Hollywood love film is a film where a couple gets together in the end and lives happily ever after, but this is a love story that shows the reality of love and the consequences that come with it. Love is not one hundred percent bliss, it also comes with pain. To get rid of this pain after a break up or death a company, Lacuna, has invented a way to erase people from their memory. The two main characters in the movie fall in love and then they both decide to erase each other from their memories. Clementine, Kate Winslet, erases Joel, Jim Carrey, because she becomes bored with their relationship. Joel goes to the Barnes and Nobles where she works to see her and she has absolutely no idea who he even is. Joel probably would not have erased Clementine, but he found a card that told him he was erased from her memory and he did not think that he could go on with the memory of he r. This film is completely different from a Hollywood version, at the end of this movie it leaves room for interpretation for the viewer to think for themselves whether Clementine and Joel will end up happily ever after, there are no clear answers. The scene begins with Joel and Clementine lying naked on a rug in the middle of the floor covered only by a repugnant quilt. The quilt has a tranquilizing effect however because of its warm colors, which is perfect for this scene. The colors of the quilt subconsciously give the feeling that everything is comfortable. As they are lying on the floor Clementine asks Joel if she is ugly. As soon as she asks the question the shot changes and it shows Joel instantly respond with an uh huh, in a manner saying no. The camera then goes to Clementine, but once she starts to speak, it instantly shows Joel again. Clementine tells Joel about how she remembers when she was little a little girl and she thought she was ugly, as the camera is still on a c lose up of Joel. Usually while someone is talking the camera would be on them, but in this scene the camera is on a close up of Joel while Clementine is talking to show his expressions and to see the sincerity of his emotions and the love he has for Clementine. The next shot is a picture of Clementine when she was little. The picture of her is a somewhat average little girl. She is sitting in a chair dressed in a pink cowgirl outfit holding a stuffed giraffe, which is what I would think of as being a fairly standard picture that would be taken at the grandparents house after opening presents at Christmas. It gives me this feeling because she.This picture shows what Joel pictures her as a little girl. He sees her as being a completely innocent child, and that is the way that he wants to remember her. The camera then pans across about ten dolls while it is out of focus until it reaches the ugly doll, that was also named Clementine, and then it focuses and zooms in on it. Clementine te lls Joel that she would yell at the doll to try and make it prettier, and she for some reason believed that if the doll became prettier then she would too. The fact that Clementine is telling Joel about the doll in this intimate moment is that it makes her seem vulnerable and in need to Joels affection. The camera then goes to a close up of Clementine just in time to see Joel begin to kiss her. As they are kissing Joel repeatedly calls Clementine pretty, and she says Joel, dont ever leave me. I think this is the pinnacle of their relationship, this is the most intimate and emotional shot in the entire movie where they both are completely content with each other. This also shows that they need each other even through the times that they may not be happy with each other. The scene takes a drastic change when the next shot shows Joel crawling desperately on the ground in complete darkness except for the light fixed on the middle of the screen. Joel is begging out loud Please, let me ke ep this memory. The light fixed on the middle of the screen signifies Joel being lost. It shows that he has no idea where he is, not physically but emotionally. Joel is emotionally lost because he thought that deep down in his heart he wanted to forget everything about Clementine. This is the turning point in Joels decision to have his memory erased. At this exact point Joel realizes that he desperately wants to retain the memories of Clementine even though some of them may be painful. He realizes that he does not have to completely forget her to move on. Joels mind then starts to remember other times of perfect ecstasy. The camera shows Joel and Clementine lying on the ice next to each other. The camera shows a close up of their hands as they grasp each other and Joel says I could die right now Clem, Im just happy. Ive never felt that before. Clementine moves to a position that she can lay her head on his chest. The expression on her face is also utter happiness. Joel then says, Im just exactly where I want to be. The scene goes to chaos from here. As soon as he finishes the sentence, it shows them lying in what looks to be a busy sidewalk in the middle of a metropolitan area, but again in the darkness with the light fixed only on them. The chaos reminds me of the way dreams work, the background or room does not always make sense and not everything is clear. Clem is then pulled away from Joel, as if to show that he is losing her again. The vary fact that they are erasing each other from their memories is showing that they are trying to hide from the fact that love is not easy. Joel and Clementine both take the easy way out. I think that this film is trying to send the message that love is hard, but it is worth the pain that will undoubtedly come. I am reminded of a quote by Lord Tennyson that goes Tis greater to have loved once than to have never loved at all. This quote means that even if you have been heart broken the good memories and times vastly outweigh the bad. The sad part about this movie is the fact that neither Joel nor Clementine had the temperance to see this and just gave up. Once they find out that they had erased each other from their memories things start to make sense for them. Clementine understands why she keeps feeling deja vu, and why something just did not feel right with Patrick. Joel responds with I cant see anything that I dont like about you. Clementine says But you will. You will think of things and Ill get bored with you and feel trapped because that is what happened with me. Joel says OK as if he is relieved, which Clementine promptly answers with OK. They both decide that they want to try and start over with their relationship even though they know that it probably will not work out because it has already failed once, but there is a possibility for it to succeed. They now understand that the risk they take to have a relationship and fail, is far greater than to not have even attempted to have one at all. The movie ends with the song Change of Heart playing while Clementine and Joel are walking in the snow towards their new beginning. The director is implying that they had a change of heart and that things in the end did work out for them to live together happily ever after, but not with out loves temporary and necessary glitches.

Younger people also suffer from mental illnesses the same way that adults do. 14 to 20 percent of individuals under the age of eighteen suffer from a case of mental illness. Studies show that 9 to 13 percent of children between the ages of nine and seventeen suffer from a serious emotional disturbances, that disrupts the child's daily life. Major depression is a severe disorder. Symptoms include withdraw from family and/or friends, weight loss, sleeping problems, frequent crying, fleeing helpless, delusions, and hallucinations. This disease is usually diagnosed during adolescence; parents may notice grades dropping, poor self-image, troubled social relations, and suicidal acts. This disease may be fatal if the person becomes suicidal. Phobia is a disease where a person has an irrational fear of an object or situation. Some examples of phobias are fear of flight, cats, heights, enclosed spaces, reptiles, and the most severe is agoraphobia the fear to leave a safe place such as home. Phobias are diagnosed personhows sings of a certain fear many times. This can only affect a person's life if the phobia is severe. For example, if a person has agoraphobia, fear of leaving a safe place then that person's life would be very isolated. Civil War's Wet Plate Collodion Photography The wet plate collodion process was a manner of taking photographs which used panes of glass, coated with a chemical solution, as the negative. It was the method of photography in use at the time of the Civil War, and it was a fairly complicated procedure. The wet plate method was invented by Frederick Scott Archer, an amateur photographer in Britain, in 1851. Frustrated by the difficult photography technology of the time, a method known as calotype, Scott Archer sought to develop a simplified process for preparing a photographic negative. His discovery was the wet plate method, which was generally known as the â€Å"collodion process.† The word collodion refers to the syrupy chemical mixture which was used to coat the glass plate. Numerous Steps Were Required The wet plate process required considerable skill. The required steps: A glass sheet was coated with chemicals, known as collodion.The coated plate was immersed in a bath of silver nitrate, which made it sensitive to light.The wet glass, which would be the negative used in the camera, was then placed in a light-proof box.The negative, in its special light-proof holder, would be placed inside the camera.A panel in the light-proof holder, known as the dark slide, along with the lens cap of the camera, would be removed for several seconds, thereby taking the photograph.The â€Å"dark slide† of the light-proof box was replaced, sealing the negative up in darkness again.The glass negative was then taken to the darkroom and developed in chemicals and â€Å"fixed,† making the negative image on it permanent. The Wet Plate Collodion Process Had Serious Drawbacks The steps involved in the wet plate process, and the considerable skill required, imposed obvious limitations. Photographs taken with the wet plate process, from the 1850s through the late 1800s, were almost always taken by professional photographers in a studio setting. Even photographs taken in the field during the Civil War, or later during expeditions to the West, required the photographer to travel with a wagon full of equipment. Perhaps the first war photographer was a British artist, Roger Fenton, who managed to transport cumbersome photographic equipment to the battlefront of the Crimean War. Fenton had mastered the wet plate method of photography soon after it became available and put it into practice shooting landscapes of the British midlands. Fenton took a trip to Russia in 1852 and took photographs. His travels proved that the latest photographic method could be utilized outside of a studio. However, traveling with the equipment and the necessary chemicals to develop the images would present a formidable challenge. There are no combat photographs from the Civil War, as people in the photographs had to hold a pose for the length of the exposure. And for photographers working in battlefield or camp conditions, there were great obstacles. It was difficult to travel with the chemicals required for preparing and developing the negatives. And the glass panes used as negatives were fragile and carrying them in horse-drawn wagons presented a whole set of difficulties. Generally speaking, a photographer working in the field, such as Alexander Gardner when he shot the carnage at Antietam, would have an assistant along who mixed the chemicals. While the assistant was in the wagon preparing the glass plate, the photographer could set up the camera on its heavy tripod and compose the shot. Even with an assistant helping, each photograph taken during the Civil War would have required about ten minutes of preparation and developing. And once a photograph was taken and the negative was fixed, there was always a problem of a negative cracking. A famous photograph of Abraham Lincoln by Alexander Gardner shows damage from a crack in the glass negative, and other photographs of the same period show similar flaws. By the 1880s a dry negative method began to be available to photographers. Those negatives could be purchased ready to be used, and did not require the complicated process of preparing the collodion as required in the wet plate process.

Earthquake in Japan Essay On March 11, 2011, the most powerful earthquake ever recorded hit Japans eastern coast. It killed hundreds of people as it made its way through the streets and fields, sweeping away boats, cars and homes. Its magnitude was 8.9, releasing a 23-foot tsunami and then provoking more than 50 aftershocks for hours. This horrific event resulted in the loss of thousands of lives and devastated entire towns. The amount of damage caused by the earthquake and resulting tsunami was excessive, with most of the damage being caused by the tsunami. Thousands of families were left without electricity. Many nuclear and conventional power plants went offline after the earthquake. Cell phones and landline services suffered major disruptions so many people weren’t able to communicate with their relatives across the country. Japans transportation was also affected. Expressways were damaged; cars and trucks were swept away by the tsunami and railway services cancelled. The earthquake was caused by an uplift of the sea floor, where the Pacific tectonic plate slides beneath the plate Japan sits on. This motion pulls the upper plate down until the stress builds up enough to cause a seismic event. Tons of miles of crust ruptured along the area where the tectonic plates meet. Since the earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth, much of its energy was released at the seafloor, therefore causing the tsunami that devastated Japan and causing chaos among the Japanese community. Even though Japan was said to be â€Å"prepared† for a natural disaster such as a tsunami by building protective walls, the large size of the water surge was completely unexpected. The tsunami walls were built based on much smaller tsunami heights recorded in the past. To the surprise of the Japanese people, the tsunami simply washed over the top of the seawalls, collapsing some in the process. The tsunami also caused a number of nuclear accidents. Many electrical generators were taken down, and at least three nuclear reactors suffered explosions due cooling system failure. The tsunami waves overtopped seawalls and destroyed diesel backup power systems, leading to severe problems such as large explosions and radioactive leakage. It has been almost a year since the devastating 9.0 earthquake and tsunami destroyed coastal communities in northern Japan killing more than 15,000 people. What struck me the most about this tragedy is the reaction of the Japanese community and picturing what it would have been like to be present at that moment. I can simply imagine the terror in people’s faces trying to survive and doing everything they could to save their families and themselves. Even though thousands of people died, those who lived through this horrible experience can count with our total support and help from those who could not do anything at the moment and simply watched as Mother Nature, once again, did its job.

In fact, we come to learn that Sam and Hally are so close that Hally would actually spend a lot of his time as a child in Sam?s room, where they and Willie would play and talk often. So, for part of the play, Sam and Hally reminisce of the old days. For example, there was one time when Sam built a kite out of brown paper and tomato-box wood pasted together with flour and water and with a tail of Hally?s mother?s old stockings. The main conflict about the The Terrible Transformation was the way they started a new social and economic system by practicing slave trade. They would determine your freedom based on your skin color. European traders would go to west africa and bring slaves over to the united states so that slave owners could purchase them to work on their crop fields. This was very unfair because they sold colored people to benefit themselves economically. That is why the free blacks rebelled against society and returned the brutality their masters had shown them. The European traders would kidnapp the African slaves and have them walk almost 1000 miles to the European Coastal forts. Only half of the people survived the ones who were too weak or sick were either killed or left to die. They traveled for almost 4 months across the Atlantic ocean. The Africans were treated like animals while they were being transported to the Americas. After they were enslaved and The Declaration Of Independence took the place the enslaved Africans made petitions to end slavery but nothing ever happened. When they were free they rebelled because they were denied citizenship. The Africans were clearly affected more than anyone involved in this. Sadly they were taken from their homeland, and used as objects to benefit the wealthy people economically; which of course was the rich white americans. Therefore after they complete the labor they were assigned and are set free the least thing the government officials could’ve done was grant them citizenship. Europeans would do this because having someone work for free , would help them gain more land. The more slaves they brought in and sold the more land they obtained . Try to get in the habit of keeping supplies on hand for this active reading technique.Stay alert for important or pivotal information. Learn to identify meaningful statements in your book. In a piece of literature, this may be a statement that foreshadows an important event or a particularly beautiful use of language.
